Pacnet Expands Data Center Footprint to Address Growing Asian Cloud

New Sustainable, LEED-Compliant Data Landing Station Will Provide One-Stop Co-Location and High-Speed Connectivity

Pacnet on Thursday announced its latest investment into a new Data Landing Station (DLS) in Hong Kong, with direct high-speed connectivity into Pacnet's pan-Asian subsea cable network. This is part of the company's strategic plan to expand its hosting and co-location infrastructure to meet the burgeoning demand for data center services across Asia Pacific.

"We are building this capability in Hong Kong to serve Asia's growing appetite for cloud services. More enterprises are tapping into the cloud paradigm to realize economies of scale as they expand across the region, and Hong Kong is well-positioned as a data center hub to support this," said Bill Barney, Chief Executive Officer of Pacnet. "The new DLS will extend Pacnet's technological leadership in IP services, as the accelerating adoption of cloud and the unprecedented boom in digital content drive up demand for data center resources in Asia Pacific."

As part of its Digital 21 Strategy, the Hong Kong SAR government is actively developing Hong Kong to be a regional data center hub. According to a recent Gartner report(1), data centers and web hosting in the Asia Pacific market will hit $4.5 billion by 2015, increasing at a CAGR of 14.3% from $2 billion in 2010. The research firm also noted that the growth of managed hosting services will be driven by an increase in the volume of demand and a move toward higher-quality data center facilities.

"The growth of hosting services continues in Asia Pacific. Enterprises are demanding more data center capacity, space and racks to support their business expansion in the region," wrote Vincent Fu, Principal Research Analyst of Gartner, in the report. He added that following the earthquakes in Japan, this has "pushed some Japanese companies to seek alternative disaster recovery sites outside of the country, which will create more hosting demand in Asia Pacific."

"Increasingly, customers are demanding high-speed connectivity alongside co-location services. By locating the new data center on the site of our Cable Landing Station (CLS), we are able to deliver high-speed connectivity and the network redundancy to support their growing business demands," Mr. Barney said. "The big shift into the cloud is also evolving quickly, and we need hosting and network infrastructures that are not only reliable, but also energy efficient to support this business transformation."

The Pacnet Hong Kong Data Landing Station will be the first facility of its kind in Hong Kong to attain the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, an internationally recognized certification program for meeting rigorous green building performance standards. The two-storey facility will be built within the site of Pacnet's EAC-1 CLS in Tseung Kwan O.

The carrier-neutral data center facility will be directly connected to Pacnet's EAC-C2C subsea cable, Asia's largest privately owned subsea network, providing customers with high capacity, low latency connectivity across Asia and the United States, with multiple resiliency options.

The latest DLS will be outfitted with state-of-the-art Tier III data center facilities to support 800 high power density racks and at this stage, will have IT power of 3 MW. It is slated for completion by December 2011.
